Eye of the Tiger

I wanted to make a birthday present for my friend Patrick (Modern Primate). Patrick generates a lot of weird sounds and uses his collection of minidisc samples. I decided to make him something that would both make noise (APC circuit) and be able to affect sounds he's already sampled (Filter circuit).

Board

The filter was one I had tried before, cut out of the WSG circuit at musicfromouterspace. It certainly doesn't give the best sound quality, but it's easy to build and runs off 9V. The sweep is pretty wide, but towards the upper end it does an abrupt jump and opens way up.

I wired it so that you can output the APC directly, or flip a switch to route it through the filter. The filter also has an input so that you can run samples or whatever through it separately. The circuits are on the same board, and there is a lot of bleed-over. If you're listening to the filter output, it is still heavily affected by the controls on the APC circuit. You can get around it by turning the APC controls all the way up.

Face

I wanted this box to look different from the previous blue ones, so I bought some Krylon Fusion spray-paint. It claims to bond directly to plastic, and seems to have worked pretty well. Since I wasn't going to be the one using it, I needed to put some labels on the controls. I used a metallic silver Sharpie, which didn't work nearly as well as I'd hoped. It took a lot of drawing back and forth to actually get some ink out.

Back

I put the circuit board on risers again, but forgot to take into account the size of the big capacitor from the filter circuit. I ended up having to cut a hole in the back of the case to let it stick through.
